AOTLN April Webinar: Dismiss Upon Civil Commitment with AOT

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of nonviolent offenders found to require competency restoration. This has led to more and more state psychiatric beds being set aside to serve this population and fewer and fewer beds available for those in psychiatric crisis who are not criminally involved. In fact, in several states, the only way to gain access to a state hospital bed is to commit a crime.

States and local jurisdictions are looking to assisted outpatient treatment as a potential solution for those offenders who are unlikely to be restored to competency in the time allowed by law, do not pose a risk to the community, and meet criteria for civil commitment with AOT.
