SUMMARY:July AOT Champions Web Chat
DESCRIPTION:The AOT Champions web chat is scheduled for Thursday\, July 24\, at 3 p.m. ET. \nAn “AOT champion” is anyone working on the grassroots level\, from inside or outside the system\, to convince stakeholders in their community to come together to establish a quality AOT program or make an existing program better. AOT champions recruit\, assemble\, educate\, and motivate leaders to support and prioritize AOT. As with any advocacy for policy change\, these efforts take patience\, persistence\, and unsinkable optimism. \nIf you are currently fighting this good fight in your community— whether for an AOT program that is still just a dream\, or for an existing program that has yet to reach its potential—this web chat is for you. Discuss strategies to get reluctant or disinterested key leaders to the table\, raise awareness of the impact of untreated SMI\, and rebut common arguments against implementing AOT. This is an opportunity to share your own experiences\, ask questions\, and perhaps even forge new alliances. Register here today!

SUMMARY:AOTLN June Webinar: Bridging the Gap: Housing Strategies for AOT Participants
DESCRIPTION:June’s AOT Learning Network webinar\, Bridging the Gap: Housing Strategies for AOT Participants\, will feature a panel of dedicated experts from diverse jurisdictions discussing housing challenges and solutions within their communities. \nSecuring and maintaining stable housing is a significant challenge for individuals diagnosed with SMI\, and housing instability often exacerbates mental health conditions. The ongoing shortage of affordable housing and rising costs across the country only compound this issue\, making it seem insurmountable at times. Join us as we explore critical questions such as: How can we overcome barriers to housing\, including eligibility and entry challenges? How do we navigate the gap between participants’ housing preferences and what is available in the community? And in cases where an AOT participant is unhoused and cannot be located\, what steps should be taken? \nPanelists include Nicholas Schrantz\, Probate Court Monitor for Butler County\, Ohio; Alejandra Piñón\, Behavioral Health Supervisor for ACT and AOT Programs in Bexar County\, Texas; and Katherine Schiller\, Associate General Counsel for Community Behavioral Health Services in Georgia. This webinar will take place Wednesday\, June 18 at 3 p.m. ET. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:AOTLN February Webinar: Attorneys in AOT: A View from Both Sides of the Aisle
DESCRIPTION:Attorneys play a crucial role in the success of AOT programs\, as AOT orders cannot be issued without legal representation for the petitioner and respondent. The attorney for the petitioner represents the individual or entity seeking AOT\, ensuring all legal standards are met\, while the respondent’s attorney defends the rights and interests of the individual subject to the AOT petition or court order\, safeguarding their due process protections. \nFebruary’s webinar will feature a presentation by Daniela Chisolm\, Esq.\, an attorney with a unique perspective\, having served on both sides of the aisle: Assistant County Attorney Daniela Chisolm serves as a Senior Trial Attorney in the Mental Health Litigation Unit at the El Paso County Attorney’s Office\, where she represents the state of Texas in civil court commitment proceedings. With experience as a former defense attorney representing individuals in the commitment process\, Chisolm brings a comprehensive perspective on the civil commitment laws\, offering valuable insight into the systemic challenges faced by both sides within the mental health system. In addition to her legal work\, Chisolm is a dedicated trainer for local\, statewide\, and national mental health stakeholders. She also serves as Vice President on the Board of Directors for NAMI El Paso and is deeply committed to improving the mental health system. \nJoin us Thursday\, February 20 at 3 p.m. ET to learn critical aspects of both roles and ways in which attorneys can serve as leaders in AOT beyond legal representation. Register here today!

SUMMARY:AOTLN November Webinar: Spirituality\, Recovery\, and SMI
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday November 21 at 3 p.m. ET for Spirituality\, Recovery\, and SMI\, presented by Jared Wyma-Bradley\, who holds a master’s in divinity. This presentation will highlight the role of spirituality in recovery\, explore how to support clients’ spirituality\, and provide a framework for understanding and supporting someone in AOT who is experiencing religious delusions. \nResearch indicates individuals diagnosed with SMI who experience religious delusions are less likely to seek and maintain treatment compared to those who do not experience religious delusions. Despite this\, few health professionals feel comfortable addressing topics of religion and spirituality with clients. Wyma-Bradley will discuss how a client-centered approach can respect each client’s autonomy and beliefs without expecting each care provider to be an expert on religion and spirituality. Attendees will gain essential tools to effectively meet the spiritial and religious needs of AOT participants\, while upholding ethical and professional boundaries. \nJared Wyma-Bradley serves as Senior AOT Adviser on TAC’s AOT Implementation Department. Prior to joining TAC\, Jared served as an interfaith spiritual care provider in a public inpatient psychiatric hospital providing spiritual care to individuals experiencing mental illness. Jared holds a master’s degree in divinity from Boston University School of Theology and completed 1\,600 hours of supervised clinical training in spiritual care known as Clinical Pastoral Education. Join us for this valuable conversation on navigating these complex topics in care. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:AOTLN October Webinar: AOT in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, October 17 at 3 p.m. ET for AOT in NYC\, presented by William Fisher\, M.D. The webinar will focus on how AOT is implemented in New York City and review findings from recent outcomes data collection. This presentation will highlight a program that does not rely on an active judge since AOT programs in New York — mandated under state law — do not typically include regular court check-ins. Rather\, the success of AOT in New York City is the result of effective treatment team engagement and diligent monitoring in the community. \nFor over two decades\, the state of New York has required AOT programs to collect an array of outcomes data\, therefore much of the data we rely on comes out of this state. Dr. Fisher will walk through some of the more recent findings from the New York City program. \nDr. Fisher is the Senior Director of Clinical Services in the Bureau of Mental Health at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He has served as director of the assisted outpatient treatment program in New York City for the past 8 years. A board-certified psychiatrist\, Dr. Fisher brings a wealth of expertise treating those with severe mental illness to the network. As Clinical Director for over 20 years at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens\, Dr. Fisher oversaw all clinical services delivered in the large state-operated facility\, including over 600 inpatients and 1800 outpatients. Dr. Fisher also teaches as an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Fisher’s presentation will focus on how AOT is implemented in New York\, as well as highlighting recent outcomes data from the program. Please join us for this insider’s view of the country’s largest AOT program. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:September AOTLN Webinar: Foundations of E-IMR
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, September 19 at 3 p.m. EDT for Foundations of E-IMR. Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) is an evidence-based practice that helps people with severe mental illness (SMI) learn to manage their illness and achieve their recovery goals. Enhanced Illness Management and Recovery (E-IMR) is an augmented version of IMR that incorporates Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) principles. This enhancement is designed to more effectively support individuals experiencing both mental illness and substance use disorders (SUD). E-IMR can be used by all levels of practitioner\, including AOT providers. \nLearn the foundations of this valuable practice straight from the experts who developed it! Foundations of E-IMR will be presented by Julie Rohovit\, Ph.D.\, and Jennifer Wiseman\, MPS\, LADC\, both of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Practice Transformation. Leave the webinar with specific strategies and resources to utilize E-IMR in your own practice and community as you serve those with co-occurring SMI and SUD. \nRegister here. \n

SUMMARY:AOTLN July Webinar: Recognizing and Reducing Stigma in AOT
DESCRIPTION:We know language matters in mental health\, but to what extent? Would you be surprised to hear that a 2018 study found that over 60% of Americans would be unwilling to work closely with a person diagnosed with schizophrenia or have someone experiencing schizophrenia marry into their family? Would you believe that 67% of Americans think that people with schizophrenia are dangerous and likely to be violent? \nDespite increased public understanding of the biological origins of SMI and efforts to destigmatize mental health conditions\, stigma and misconceptions around severe mental illness persist. Join us Thursday\, July 18 at 3 p.m. ET for Recognizing and Reducing Stigma in AOT to explore the topic of stigma and the impact it can have on recovery for individuals experiencing severe mental illnesses like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Learn how to use person-centered language in care settings and daily life to reduce stigma and increase understanding. Audience members will leave equipped with practical language alternatives\, resource documents\, and anecdotes to use in their communities. \nPresenters include AOT Implementation Coordinator Brooke Gentry\, AOT Research and Evaluation Specialist Shanti Silver\, and Senior AOT Adviser Jared Wyma-Bradley. Register here today. \nAOT Learning Network (AOTLN) event notices like this one are marketed over email to members of the network. SUMMARY:AOTLN June Webinar: Judge as "Life Coach" in AOT
DESCRIPTION:We know that assisted outpatient treatment programs are not one-size fits all – and with good reason. Many communities\, including the entirety of New York\, sustain successful AOT without “active” AOT judges. In these programs\, the judge may not have involvement with participants beyond issuing the initial AOT order and any needed continuations. However\, we are excited to share that June’s webinar will focus on those “active” AOT judges who go above and beyond to support AOT participants in their recovery. \nJoin us as Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer of Summit County\, OH facilitates a panel of AOT judges from across the country to discuss rapport-building\, engagement strategies\, and more as we explore the judge as “life coach” in AOT. As always\, webinar participants will have an opportunity to ask questions. \nPanelists include Judge Stephanie Burke of Jefferson County (Louisville)\, KY\, Judge Johanna Bender of King County (Seattle)\, WA\, and Judge Michael Fish of Porter County (Valparaiso)\, IN. \nPlease join us Thursday\, June 20 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Register here today.

SUMMARY:AOTLN May Webinar: Supported Employment in AOT
DESCRIPTION:When asked about their recovery goals\, many AOT participants mention wanting to work. Employment can play a significant role in recovery. In addition to confidence\, relationship-building\, and increased independence\, some AOT participants make a connection between gaining and maintaining employment and treatment adherence. \nMay’s webinar will focus on the importance of advancing AOT participants’ employment goals by highlighting the partnership between AOT provider Georgia Pines and their supported employment partner\, AmericanWork. \nPlease join us Thursday\, May 16 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Register here today: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6nNabekMQEKXKsowA4qToQ

SUMMARY:AOTLN April Webinar: Dismiss Upon Civil Commitment with AOT
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of nonviolent offenders found to require competency restoration. This has led to more and more state psychiatric beds being set aside to serve this population and fewer and fewer beds available for those in psychiatric crisis who are not criminally involved. In fact\, in several states\, the only way to gain access to a state hospital bed is to commit a crime. \nStates and local jurisdictions are looking to assisted outpatient treatment as a potential solution for those offenders who are unlikely to be restored to competency in the time allowed by law\, do not pose a risk to the community\, and meet criteria for civil commitment with AOT. \nPlease join us Thursday\, April 18 at 3 p.m. Eastern as TAC staff present a webinar on “Dismiss Upon Civil Commitment with AOT: One Alternative to the Competency Restoration Crisis”. In this webinar\, we will discuss the benefits of using AOT in lieu of competency restoration\, look at the various pathways for an offender to be placed on AOT\, and review the steps that AOT Champions can take to advocate for the adoption of such a policy in your community. Register here today.
